Dear Friends of Katadyn

Awareness about the dangers of polluted drinking water and the correct method of purifying it can save many lives. The French development organisation, ACV (Amélioration des Conditions de Vie), which, together with the municipality of Wallisellen, the Forch Rotary Club, and Katadyn, is running a development project in the region of Fimela in Senegal, fully recognises this fact. This project uses proven Katadyn filters to prevent more than 3,000 children from contracting diarrhoea, which is highly dangerous in these conditions.
In the first phase, the filters are delivered by Katadyn, and independent local manufacturers will thereafter start producing the filter containers. This will not only bring work to the local villages, but will also transfer valuable know-how to Senegal, according to the Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

2006 was an excellent year for Katadyn. This was thanks to your cooperation with us. For this reason I wish to offer you my most heartfelt thanks. We have more than met our targets, and are five percent over the planned budget. This year we will also look for new business opportunities, find new business partners, and enter into new cooperations. Besides the growing number of outdoor enthusiasts around the world who find our filters to be the best, we are getting increasingly more military contracts for the use of our solutions for survival operations and rescue missions. These demands confirm to us that we manufacture the most reliable products for the toughest conditions. We are particularly proud of the Vario-Filter which left our production facilities in time for the start of the outdoor season. This versatile filter will protect people from nasty surprises – wherever they travel. The Vario-Filter has already won several international awards.

Have you heard?

A study shows: Tap water is up to 1000 times more environmentally friendly than mineral water

Tap water is between 900 and 1000 times more environmentally friendly than mineral water. The further the bottled water is transported, the more it is refrigerated, and the more expensive the packaging is, the closer the “1000-times mark” is. The energy cost for one litre of mineral water from the EU area is about 0.31 litre of petroleum, for Swiss mineral water it is about 0.15 litre of petroleum and for tap water it is 0.0003 litre of petroleum. The study entitled: “Ökobilanz Trinkwasser - Mineralwasser” (The ecobalance for tap water versus mineral water), was commissioned by the Swiss Gas and Water Industry Associates (Schweizerischen Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches (SVGW). (For further information see www.svwg.ch).

PremiumVoyage travel bottles are big sellers at the Zürich-Kloten airport

Since the regulations for carry-on luggage have become stricter, there are uncountable bottles, vials and tins that have ended up in dustbins next to the x-ray machines. The airport operator, Unique, reacted at once and now sells PremiumVoyage travel bottles at the Customer Service desk. This at least allows passengers to salvage their permitted volume of liquids and carry them on board. The transparent little bottles are fitted with leak-proof twist-on caps and are available in two sizes which may be filled with various liquids (shampoo, shower gel, body lotion, etc) according to need. As well as the bottle sets, other practical travel products from the PremiumVoyage range are on offer.

The umbrella lights up the way home

After a mild winter comes a changeable spring – guaranteed. In order to save you from having to search for your car in vain in the dark, or from losing your way home with the dog, the PremiumVoyage umbrella will light up your way with the press of a button. The detachable LED-light which is fitted to the handle is also ideal for reading a street map in the rain, and is therefore the perfect companion for the big city explorer.

Marketing & events

The ”Globeboot” Globetrotter spring event

The Globeboot event will provide a weekend with lots of outdoor fun for the whole family.  Situated right on the waterfront, this is the ideal start for testing various water craft (faltboats, kayaks, canoes, and so on). Of course, Katadyn outdoor products – portable water filters and Trekking Meals – can also be found there. These will allow sportsmen going on expeditions and families going on adventure holidays to enjoy healthy meals and clean drinking water without adding too much weight to their backpacks.

Further information and dates can be found here.

Boat Show in Düsseldorf (January 20 – January 28) / London Boat Show (January 5. – January 14)

This year Katadyn Germany had their own stand in Düsseldorf and for the first time sold their products direct to customers. This show confirmed the trend that its visitors are top class when it comes to purchasing power, internationality, and levels of technical knowledge. Even the biggest German marine dealer will now have desalinators and water filters in their product range. In addition, a number of large deals were struck for Trekking Mahlzeiten and their range of emergency meals.

Katadyn was represented twice over at the largest boat show in Britain: Katadyn was well represented at the stands of our new partner, MACTRA Equipment & Fittings Ltd (www.mactrashop.co.uk), and at that of our old distributor, Blue Water Supplies (www.bluewatersupplies.com/watermakers.htm).

IDEX (February 18 – February 22)

At the IDEX defence exhibition in Dubai, Katadyn presented its desalinator, which was announced as being accepted as standard equipment by the navies of various states. The water filters are particularly liked by elite units, and they use them for life saving and survival operations.

World record with two Katadyn PowerSurvivor 80E

At the BIGBLU Rome Sea Expo (8 March – 12 March) Alessandro di Benedetto presented the catamaran with which he set a new world record in August last year: he is the first person in the ”20 Feet Sport Category” to cross the North Pacific in one go and in doing so he broke the ”World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC)” world record of 62 days, 17 hours, 50 minutes and 55 seconds. The 4.482 nautical miles-long trip took him from Yokohama (Japan) to San Francisco (USA). On board he carried two Katadyn PowerSurvivor 80E units. We congratulate Alessandro on his success. International UN Water day: Pure drinking water for the children of Senegal

Katadyn filters, proven to produce excellent results, are being used in the region of Fimela, Senegal. They reduce the dangers of contracting diarrhoea, which are present due to the use of unclean drinking water, by almost two-thirds.

In Senegal, more than 50% of the population has no access to clean drinking water. The drinking water problem does not have government priority, and there are no local aid organisations to help out. The “Drinking Water for Children” project is therefore of particular importance. The French development organisation, ACV (Améliorations des Conditions de Vie), along with the municipality of Wallisellen and Katadyn, have realised this and have reacted accordingly. Katadyn supplies the drip-filters, and the development organisation runs the educational programme regarding clean drinking water. The transfer of knowledge works best with children; they quickly learn about clean water at school, and perform valuable training work at home with their families.

A study, published in 2003 in the “Cochran Review”, shows that the right choice of water preparation is key for combating several diseases in developing countries. Drip-filters have shown themselves to be superior to the use of African Sari-cooking cloths (too unsafe), boiling (too expensive because of the lack of firewood) and chlorination (unsuitable for routine use as a disinfectant), and will mechanically retain bacteria (E-coli, salmonella, Cholera) and protozoa (Amoebas, Giardia). A single drip-filter will purify up to 150,000 litres.

Drip-filters are appreciated more and more

Helvetas and Katadyn appeared together at the MUBA show in Basel. Both partners are going to work together more closely in development aid projects. In the future Katadyn will deliver drip-filters to places where tap water is a health risk or the laying of water pipes is not economically feasible. Katadyn received its first positive experience in working with a French development organisation in Senegal.

France does it first: Katadyn provides free information for travellers

Katadyn France has produced information and product brochures that are displayed in most of the inoculation centres in the country. Travellers going to critical countries may get information about diseases to which they may be vulnerable and countermeasures to be taken against them. According to Katadyn France it is a long term information campaign for travellers.

Katadyn goes east

With its new distribution partner, Camping 2000, Katadyn enters the Russian market for the first time. Camping, fishing and hunting are popular in Russia. Katadyn will at first sell filters, and when approval from the authorities is given, they will extend their range with Micropur. Camping 2000 has been active in Russia for more than fifteen years and is well known in the outdoor, camping, fishing and hunting community.

Katadyn supports Swiss Greenland expedition

Greenland is a country full of contrasts. This singular environment is icy and harsh, but also fertile, mild and green. The foursome from Zürich, Jean-Luc and Sylvain Grossmann, Rafic Mecattaf and Thomas Truninger, who will commence a kayak expedition in North West Greenland in June and July, will be supported by Katadyn, which will supply outdoor meals from the Trekking Mahlzeiten range. Of course they will not go without the Mousse au Chocolat from Trekking Mahlzeiten range which is so popular among adventurers. Even the toughest man will occasionally require some mouth-watering chocolate. The four adventurers will cover more than 500 kilometres of perpetually icy waters in less than 45 days, without ever seeing any other people. New web site

Most of our customers have already encountered it. Whoever visits Katadyn on the Internet (www.katadyn.com) will find a completely revised web site. Not only is it more attractive, it is also better at informing the visitor on the subject of water – and in a way that is even more up to date. Even the Trekking-Mahlzeiten (www.trekking-mahlzeiten.de), PremiumVoyage (www.premiumvoyage.com), and PharmaVoyage (www.pharmavoyage.com) web sites have been completely revised.

Nelda Ebner: your new contact in Switzerland

The new contact for internal services since 1 February has been Mrs Nelda Ebner (aged 34). She replaces Mr Martin Güller and is responsible for order processing. Nelda Ebner has previously worked with Siemens, Novell and UBS. She is a total fan of all things horse-related and got to know about Katadyn products during some of her longer stays in Australia and Cuba.

Katadyn Germany is reinforced by ex-national skier

Mattias Hubrich (41) has been with the sales team at Katadyn Germany since 1 January. After his career with the New Zealand skiing team, this New Zealander has finished his studies as a business economist and has been a sales manager for companies such as Reebok, Macpac and SpringBoost. He will work together with the Managing Director, Klaus Henrici, on the key account customers, as well as working on sales strategies and developing further markets.

Preparations for Gigathlon: Hawaii qualifications missed and one injury sustained

Katadyn supports its own Peronin Team for the biggest Swiss Gigathlon. In his preparations for the Gigathlon, Erich Kohler Zumstein missed the Hawaii qualifications by two minutes. A chain of unhappy circumstances led to his elimination: first of all his bike arrived late and ruined in Panama City. In an intense rush Erich Kohler had to replace various components in order to get his bike ready and then he left for the start line with a high fever. In spite of this, Kohler is better placed after the race compared to his situation before. Thanks to Peronin high performance nutrition he is more advanced in his performance levels than expected.

Toni Brandi has not had a lucky start this season: he injured himself in a fall during a bicycle race in Italy. This race was also a preparation for the Swiss Gigathlon. Despite these problems, both participants can hardly wait for the Gigathlon to start.

HCD in hockey heaven

On Easter Monday, the Davos team played themselves into Swiss hockey heaven. They won the deciding playoff against SC Bern with a 1:0 victory. After 40 minutes the duel between the two strongest teams in Switzerland was undecided with no goals at all. Then the 24 year-old Robin Leblanc scored the goal that gave gold to HCD. With it Davos are Swiss ice hockey champions for the 28th time and have replaced Lugano as champions. The sponsor, Katadyn, offers the HCD team their fullest congratulations for this excellent performance.
